Three ECE faculty members elected to rank of IEEE Fellow
Drs. Narasimha Reddy (left), Jose Silva-Martinez (center) and Steve Wright (right) from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University recently were elected to the rank of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Kezunovic voted onto the NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Panel Governing Board
Recently, Dr. Mladen Kezunovic was voted onto the first Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) Governing Board. Established by NIST with the assistance of EnerNex, under a contact enabled by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the new consensus-driven organization provides an open process for businesses and other stakeholder groups to participate in coordinating and accelerating development of standards for the evolving Smart Grid.

ECE faculty member/ student receive second place poster award
Dr. Raffaella Righetti and her student Biren Parmar recently received a second place poster award at the National Meeting for Human Performance, 2009 in Houston.

Enjeti Member Part Of $4 Million NSF Project
Dr. Prasad Enjeti and two Texas A&M at Qatar (TAMUQ) faculty are among a team of investigators leading a $4 million National Science Foundation project to design new materials with enhanced capabilities for efficient energy conversion.

Serpedin co-authors book on synchronization of wireless sensor networks
Dr. Erchin Serpedin, associate professor of electrical engineering at Texas A&M University, and Dr. Qasim Chaudhari, assistant professor of electrical engineering at Iraq University, have co-authored "Synchronization in Wireless Sensor Networks: Parameter Estimation, Performance Benchmarks, and Protocols," a research monograph published recently by Cambridge University Press. The book focuses on synchronization of wireless sensor networks, which play a key role in a wide range of civilian and military applications. The book summarizes the most recent advances in the field of synchronization of wireless sensor networks with special emphasis on deriving efficient clock offset estimation schemes and performance benchmarks.

ECE professor gives lectures on Advances in Three Term Control
Dr. Shankar Bhattacharyya from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, will visit the City University of Hong Kong in December 2009 and deliver three lectures titled “Advances in Three Term Control” in the Distinguished Lecture Series of the University. The lectures cover results obtained by him and his coworkers in the field of Control Engineering. In October 2009 Bhattacharyya will also visit the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University and Santa Clara University and give lectures on the same topic. During this visit Bhattacharyya, who is also a concert artist, (www.youtube.com/user/spbsarode) will give two concerts of Indian Classical Music on the Sarode in Berkeley and Stanford respectively.

Electrical engineering’s Kundur working to improve monitoring systems
Surveillance systems that monitor an environment can be quite useful and are becoming increasingly common. Arrays of strategically placed cameras and sensors can monitor an area and convey information to a node or “sink.” These systems, called distributed multimedia sensor networks (DMSNs), are being used in homes with older people, hospitals and geriatric facilities to monitor activities, spot gait irregularities, and signal that someone has collapsed.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Texas A&M’s electrical engineering undergraduate program
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering’s undergraduate electrical and engineering programs at Texas A&M University were among the top schools nationally according to The U.S. News & World Report’s recent release of America’s best undergraduate schools for 2010.

ECE professor receives major grant from DOE
Recently Dr. Hamid Toliyat, along with researchers at GE Corporate Research and Development and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, were awarded a $6,250,000 three year grant by the Department of Energy (DOE) for their work titled "Ultra-reliable Deepwater Electrical Power Distribution System and Power Components, Prognostic Health Monitoring of Subsea T&D Systems."

ECE professor/grad student win best paper award at AHS-2009 Conference
Dr. Gregory Huff and his Ph.d. student, S. Andrew Long, recently received the Best Paper Award in Reconfigurable Hardware from the NASA/ESA (European Space Agency) Conference on Adaptive Hardware and Systems, (AHS-2009).

Han Receives NSF Grant To Develop A Microbial Fuel Cell Array for Bioenergy Research
Dr. Arum Han, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, along with Dr. Paul de Figueiredo (PI) from the plant pathology and microbiology department, have received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a microbial fuel cell (MFC) array for bioenergy research.

ECE faculty members receive TxACE grants to develop analog technology that enhances public safety
Drs. Jose Silva-Martinez (left) and Sam Palermo (right) from the Analog and Mixed Signal Group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, recently were among 10 recipients of a grant from The Texas Analog Center of Excellence (TxACE) at The University of Texas at Dallas, to develop analog technology that enhances public safety and security.

ECE Alumnus named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year
Recently William "Bill" Coskey, Chairman and CEO of ENGlobal Corp. and graduate of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University, was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2009 Award in the Energy Services category for the Houston & Gulf Coast Area.

Electrical and computer engineering hosts summer camp
High-school students built wind turbines, robots and theremins during ECE Unplugged. ECE Unplugged, showcased the different opportunities at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

ECE professor receives DTRA Young Investigator Award
Dr. Srinivas Shakkottai recently received a Young Investigator Award from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), a part of the Department of Defense and the U.S. Strategic Command

Huff receives PECASE Award, the second for ECE in two years
Dr. Gregory Huff, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, was recently named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his work on multifunctional antennas and multimodal sensing systems.

Liu receives NSF CAREER Award, fourth in the department this year
Dr. Tie Liu, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, recently received the prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). He is the fourth faculty member to receive the award this year.

ECE Undergrad Wins Outstanding Thesis Award
Recently an undergraduate student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University received the "Outstanding Thesis Award" for the Undergraduate Research Scholars class of 2009.  

Wright elected Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Medicine
Dr. Steven M. Wright was elected Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Medicine (ISMRM). The honor was announced at the 2009 ISMRM annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Wright was one of the 17 scientists from around the world selected as an ISMRM Fellow this year. The ISMRM Fellows are awarded for significant and substantial research contributions or for significant contributions to the development of the Society. Dr. Wright was cited for his significant contributions to MR engineering and RF coil design.

ECE Faculty members receive COE awards
Four faculty members in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recently received College of Engineering awards.
Karen Butler-Purry received the E.D. Brockett Professorship Award, Jean Francois Chamberland received a TEES Select Young Faculty Award, John Eknoyan received a TEES Faculty Fellow Award and Christi Madsen received a TEES Faculty Fellow Award.

A&M Engineering Students Win SAE Hybrid Competition
Recently a group of Texas A&M engineering students, many from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the 2009 SAE Formula Hybrid competition in Loudon, N.H. with their student-designed and -built gas-electric hybrid race car.

ECE student receives power association scholarship

ECE Papers Among 100 Most Popular in IEEE
Last month, a faculty member and his three Ph.D. students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, published two IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits papers which were among the top 100 most-accessed documents in IEEE's main publications database IEEEXplore.
